The Science Fair Surprise

Layla has always been the quietest student in her class at Al-Amal School. When her teacher announced the annual science fair, most students chose easy projects. Layla, however, decided to build a small machine that turns sunlight into electricity. She had been reading about solar energy since the beginning of the school year. Every afternoon, while her classmates were playing outside, she worked in the school laboratory. Her first two models failed, and some students laughed at her broken wires. "If you give up now, you will never know what you can achieve," her teacher told her. Layla repaired the design, using an old fan and some mirrors that she found at home. On the day of the fair, her machine produced enough power to light a small lamp. The judges, who came from a local university, asked her many difficult questions. She answered clearly, although her voice was shaking at the beginning. When the results were announced, Layla had won first prize for the whole school. Her classmates, who had laughed at her before, now asked her to explain how the machine worked. That evening, Layla realized that quiet students can also do loud, brilliant things.
